Pathway to Progress: Community Organizing Workshop on Indigenous Peoples Development

𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃: From October 21-25, 2024, the Department of Agriculture Kabuhayan at Kaunlaran ng Kababayang Katutubo conducted a training workshop titled “Pathway to Progress: Community Organizing Workshop on Indigenous People Development” at MO2 Westown Hotel in Iloilo City.

The training aimed to enhance the skills of 4K implementers in community organizing and strengthen their capacity for social mobilization. It also provided insights into the lives of Indigenous Peoples, providing opportunities for engagement and understanding of Indigenous households.

On the first day, the resource person, Assoc. Prof. Rimando Felicia, Chief of the Center for Labor and Industrial Relation Studies at the Research Institute for Human and Social Development, introduced concepts of community development and development discourse. He emphasized the importance of community research and resource management, discussing how to effectively plan community organizing efforts and develop leadership skills within organizations. An interactive session allowed participants to bond and introduce themselves, highlighting the importance of community development. Participants also created a mural to express their perceptions of Indigenous communities and how these communities can be developed.

On the second day, participants traveled to Sitio Nagpana in Brgy. Lipata, Barotac Viejo, Iloilo City, where they met the Ati of Nagpana Minorities Association (NAMIAS). The community welcomed the group with a cultural dance. Municipal Mayor Hon. Nielo Tupas addressed the participants, sharing his support for the community. The host region, 4K RFO 6, facilitated activities and coordinated the immersion experience with the community.

Participants had the opportunity to visit various households, allowing them to observe and engage with the daily lives of Indigenous Peoples. This immersion provided a practical application of the workshop discussions.

On the final day, participants shared their insights and experiences from the immersion, discussing the livelihoods of Indigenous communities. This reflection offered the 4K implementers a deeper understanding of Indigenous household dynamics and ways they could support these communities further.

The workshop concluded with a discussion of the basic principles of community organizing for development work. This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the development of Indigenous communities, enhancing the capacity of those involved in the program.
