A training on purple yam (ube) production was successfully conducted for the Agta Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs) of Gattaran, Cagayan. The training aimed to enhance the community’s knowledge and skills in sustainable agricultural practices, in the propagation and cultivation of purple yam.
The training was facilitated by ๐ ๐ฟ. ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฆ. ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ผ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ป๐ด๐ฟ. ๐ก๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐น ๐. ๐๐ด๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ผ๐ถ๐น๐ถ, who provided both technical expertise and practical demonstrations to ensure participants gained hands-on experience. The facilitators emphasized good agricultural practices, proper site selection, soil preparation, planting techniques, and post-harvest handling to help ensure the success of purple yam production in the community. In addition, ๐ ๐ฟ. ๐ฅ๐ผ๐บ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ฆ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ผ, agriculturist II from the Office of the Provincial Agriculture of Cagayan, delivered a heartfelt message of gratitude, expressing his appreciation for being part of the said training.
As part of the support to the community, lowland high-value crop seeds, eight native goats, and two (2) carabaos were also distributed to selected beneficiaries to help improve food security and livelihood opportunities.
This initiative forms part of broader efforts to promote livelihood opportunities, food security, and cultural preservation among IP communities, empowering them to harness indigenous knowledge while integrating modern, sustainable farming methods.
