Training of Trainers on Coffee Farm Management

𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃: From November 25 to 29, 2024, the Department of Agriculture, Kabuhayan at Kaunlaran ng Kababayang Katutubo conducted a Training of Trainers on Coffee Farm Management, titled Empowering Program Implementers: Skill Development of Indigenous People Farmers in Coffee Farm Management. The event was held at Capital O 460 World Palace Hotel in Davao City.

The training aimed to provide participants with in-depth knowledge and advanced techniques in coffee farming, focusing on sustainable and organic practices to protect the environment and improve coffee quality. It also aimed to promote community engagement by encouraging collaboration and sharing best practices.

The training began with Dr. Alejandro C. Mojica, Director of the Philippine Coffee Board Inc., who gave an introduction to coffee farming and its best practices. He explained the different types of coffee and their unique characteristics, as well as the history of coffee and how it has evolved around the world. He also discussed the proper way to plant and grow coffee, and shared valuable techniques for planting. Dr. Mojica also covered coffee plant propagation, offering important dos and don’ts for successful cultivation.

Next, Ms. Jocelyn A. Mamar, owner and manager of J&M Nursery Farm, talked about pest and disease identification and control. She explained the different types of pests and how to effectively eliminate them. Ms. Mamar also shared cost-effective alternatives for pest control and emphasized the importance of proper pest management. She then provided advanced techniques for planting coffee, highlighting the correct soil depth and size needed for healthy coffee growth. Ms. Mamar also showed how her own farm practices have led to successful coffee cultivation.

Mr. Jose J. Mamar, CEO, 4JM’s Business Management Center followed with a session on harvesting and post-harvest handling. He emphasized the importance of post-harvest care, stating that even if harvesting is done properly, the quality of the coffee can be ruined without proper post-harvest handling. Mr. Mamar shared techniques for preserving and improving coffee quality after harvest, as well as an overview of quality control and value addition in coffee production.

After the lectures, participants had the opportunity to visit a local coffee farm in the Davao Region. This site visit allowed them to observe firsthand the farming process, from planting to harvest, as well as the post-harvest procedures. It also gave them a better understanding of the challenges and strategies for gaining market access.

The training concluded with a workshop led by Mr. Gilbert Baltazar on management and production costing. This session taught participants about the necessary costs involved in coffee farming and how to limit expenses while still achieving good production. Mr. Baltazar demonstrated how effective management and production costing can lead to greater profitability in coffee farming.

Overall, the training equipped participants with valuable skills and knowledge to improve their coffee farming practices, ultimately boosting both the quality of their crops and their economic opportunities.
