Empowering Program Implementers: Skill Development of Indigenous Peoples Farmers in Livestock Farming

𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃: The Department of Agriculture Kabuhayan at Kaunlaran ng Kababayang Katutubo (4K) Program conducted a Training of Trainers on Livestock Farm Management from September 30 to October 4, 2024, at Kew Hotel in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. This training aimed to address the specific needs and challenges faced by Indigenous Peoples in livestock farming while enhancing participants’ capacities to implement sustainable practices and improve their livelihoods.

The program adopted a hands-on, participatory approach, ensuring active engagement and facilitating knowledge transfer among participants, fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment.

On the first day, Mr. Roman Dabalos, the Agricultural Provincial Coordinating Officer of Bohol welcomed the participants to Bohol and wished them a successful workshop. Following this, Engr. Rizaldy C. Mercadal from the Agricultural Training Institute Central Visayas introduced the fundamentals of livestock farming. Ms. Pablita R. Cabarles of Manga National High School then discussed various types of livestock farming and basic principles of livestock cultivation. Mr. Gilbert Baltazar and Mr. Norodin Malugayak, Cluster Heads of 4K NPMO, highlighted the importance of marketing, expense management, and calculating return on investment in livestock farming.

On the second day, Dr. Carl Leonard M. Pradera from the City of Agriculture and Veterinary Office in Tagbilaran City provided insights into livestock farming in the Philippines, focusing on care and management practices that benefit Indigenous Peoples. He also emphasized the importance of animal welfare and sustainable farming practices.

The final day included a visit to Ubay Stock Farm, where participants could apply their learnings in a practical setting, specifically with dairy cattle. They engaged in discussions about proper feeding techniques for cattle and carabaos, as well as the essential plants needed for their health. Participants also received hands-on training in artificial insemination, allowing them to learn and practice this important skill.

To conclude the training, participants shared their insights and experiences, reflecting on the value of the knowledge gained throughout the workshop.
